Swathed in resplendent sunshine, the R Premadasa Stadium will on Tuesday get its final sighting of the cream of this World Cup. Once you are down to the last four, you know you are in the presence of teams that will be sharp, in form and shot up with performance octane. All four entities, each with a gait of its own, has taken an idiosyncratic path to this checkpoint; one team took the roller coaster, a couple rode the smooth high-rise elevator, and one has lurked its way unobtrusively into the sunshine like a barnacle on a shored starfish. New Zealand is of the latter type, while host Sri Lanka has flown to the semis on a winged cloud. Having met in a group match, where the Black Caps were dealt a 112-run walloping, these two teams have already been through a dress rehearsal. While the Sri Lankans will have a blueprint by which to approach this game, the Kiwis will have labeled that match as the loss gotten out of the way.

Expect to see a clutch of under-edged cuts on this slow track. The ball will keep low as well as turn possibly square; batsmen will be in a tough dilemma whether to play horizontal or straight-batted. With a 10 wicket canter to shut England out of the tournament on Saturday, Sri Lanka emphatically crushed any lingering ideas that the Premadasa has demons for chasing teams.

Sri Lanka:

Sri Lanka have the strangest of problems in that their top order has played too well! The top four has hogged the innings through much of the tournament and, as a result, in the limited chances the middle order has gotten, it has been a no-show. The side boasts three of the top 5 run-scorers in this World Cup. While Upul Tharanga and Tillakaratne Dilshan have 4 centuries and 747 humongous runs between them, Captain Kumar Sangakkara and his deputy Mahela Jayawardene have 563 and 2 centuries among each other. Thillan Samaraweera and Chamara Silva are stationed at nos. 5 and 6 to provide steady finishes, but have walked into the middle only to walk back to the pavilion in a jiffy; that is if they have got a hit at all! The one true opportunity the middle order had to express itself, which came against Pakistan, it contrived to make heavy weather of, and though Silva thrashed out a laborious fifty, he had consumed so many balls that it seemed fairer to pity him for how much he seemed to miss being out in the middle than censure him for contriving to lose Sri Lanka what would have been a highly confidence-boosting victory. Angelo Mathews was the one member of the lower-middle order who got in a decent 40, incidentally, against New Zealand itself.

Dilshan has not stopped with just scoring prolifically. He has come back to thwart the opponents after the innings break as well, and has picked up 6 wickets, bowling at a stingy economy of 3.66 runs per over. Muttaiah Muralitharan, hamstring permitting, will be the major thorn in the Kiwi flesh. He has had 13 victims this tourney, 4 of whom wore black caps. The now time-worn Ajantha Mendis will relish the chance to bowl to a non-subcontinental team not all that savvy with spin variations. He would have sown doubt in the Kiwis’ minds by picking up 2 wickets on Tuesday. Sangakkara has expressed awareness of New Zealand’s discomfort against the variety in their attack. With Lasith Malinga thrown into the mix, the Kiwis may have a hard time of getting the score chugging along with any kind of momentum.

Fielding should be a very important component of this game, and while Jayawardene may have claimed that Sri Lanka had taken the three catches they dropped against England in their stride, his tongue will have been in his cheek. They certainly cannot afford any dropped chances against a side like New Zealand, who can be expected to create chances where there are none.

New Zealand:

The New Zealand batting has kindred tendencies with that of Sri Lanka’s. Top-heaviness and middle-flimsiness have been features both sides share. But the New Zealand pony has an extra trick: its tail wags. Brendon McCullum and Martin Guptill have effected two 10-wicket victories this tourney, and their partnership has been worth 343 runs so far. Although the Kiwi opening stand has nothing on its Sri Lankan counterpart, breaking it early will be high on Sri Lanka’s priorities. McCullum will be targeted with stopping slowness, his ebullient bat-swing ever prone to providing the tame push for a catch. Jesse Ryder, who kicked into gear with an 83 against South Africa, can be brutal with gigantic hits, and has added an element of nurture, since the last match, to his barbarism. And with Ross Taylor, who has to be the Most Valued Wicket for New Zealand, with 277 runs out of 5 innings and the ability to both graft and slaughter in the same innings, the Kiwi top four rounds itself off in a nice package that will be worth watching.

It is in the middle order where New Zealand’s rot rests. From no.5 down, there are a horde of bits and pieces players who can hit a few out of the park, but will equally soon call it quits with the bat for they can contribute with the ball later on. The Nathan McCullums and Jacob Orams are not full-fledged in either respect, but can be highly effective on their day. Oram had one such day on Friday, when he picked up 4 wickets, pulled off a tall stunner skirting the boundaries, and geed up his team-mates towards the climax. His flair with the bat has taken the downturn, but he still bends his back with the ball and has plenty of think in his tank. Everything apart, the only thing it could boil down to on Tuesday might be how these men will use their feet to handle the turn.

Daniel Vettori should be as excited as anyone to bowl on this wicket. He was absent on the field trip the spinners had in the group match between these two teams, and, having gone the length of this tournament with just the two scalps, he will bring wicket-hunger into this game along with his team-marshalling skills. Tim Southee, holder of 15 wickets this tournament, Oram, the man with the Midas arm and Scott Styris, purveyor of irksome dobblers, will hope to do as they did on Friday against South Africa. The Kiwis have no reason to change their bowling line-up from that which choked the Proteas and slow left-armer Luke Woodcock will probably keep the more experienced Daryl Tuffey out.

New Zealand has a clear edge over Sri Lanka when it comes to fielding. The most number of runs saved, awesome catches taken, or the tightest of singles cut off could be the decider in a knock-out game.

Last time these two teams played each other, Murali’s attacking frame of mind was kindled at the sight of batsmen who were relatively spin-illiterate. He picked up 4/25 at 3.12 runs per over then; can he top those sort of figures?

Scott Styris has not played an innings of substance since the attacking fifty he finished with against Pakistan in Auckland. Incidentally, his last century came in a World Cup game against the Sri Lankans! Although his hard-working 111 was not enough to win the Kiwis that super eights match in Grenada, he will have a similar wicket, an opposition and setting worth reproducing such an innings on. The low bounce will make him play straight, and while a Styris without the licence to square-cut balls to the fence is not a Styris worth his lapel, his experience should see him conjure up the requisite shots.

Prediction: Perhaps the Black Caps are a side whom it suits to go through life with their faces under a hood. This inclination for anonymity may also be the cause of their undoing in the climactic stages of a big tournament, a visceral aversion to the spotlight making them sub-consciously throw in the towel at the point where further success would make for negative utility…? Whatever it be, Sri Lanka will hope for this phenomenon to kick in, for the only thing that can push the Kiwis past the line ahead of Sri Lanka is concerted purpose. New Zealand cannot match the Lankans, player for player, in terms of cricketing class and pedigree, and will have to eke the victory out with similar, if not greater, determination and intent to what had made the formidable South Africans go jelly-kneed in the quarters.

We know they are blind to reputation or game-scenarios, but can they ignore their dubious record of never having progressed past the semis? New Zealand may be in the pinkest of mental healths, but so will Sri Lanka be. Barring a burst of Black mercury, the script should have Sri Lanka exeunt the stage with a berth in the Final!

The Chidambaram Stadium has helped bowlers produce two low-scoring thrillers. Dhoni didn’t expect the wicket to behave differently on Sunday. “It’s ideal to study the wicket on Sunday morning,” he said, “but it is known to have extra bounce.
